History Facts
Before the arrival of the Spanish, there were no fabrics in the territory of Panama, so the first molas were tattooed on the skin of the Guna Indians whose designs were inspired by the figures that nature gave them, such as: Animals, Flowers and symmetrical and asymmetric figures from leaves and stem. Sometimes the designs were inspired by dreams that we call it as abstract figures.
According to the Gunas beliefs, it was the Ibelele brothers, who came from heaven, who taught them different disciplines such as hunting, fishing and the knowledge to cook and create molas, among others.
Care of Kuna mola masks
We recommend washing it by hand with soap and warm water to keep the colors and don’t lose their quality in the short term.
